Restore Conservation Services was engaged by the Walhalla Board of Management to assess the significance of the collection of the Walhalla Old Post and Telegraph Office Museumand to comment on the future use and management of the collection.

The former Walhalla Post and Telegraph Office is of state and local heritage significance. It is Walhalla’s last remaining public building with a high level of intactness externally and internally. Now functioning as a museum, the building holds an extensive collection that parallels the history of Walhalla and its residents, especially postmistress Miss Doreen Hannan. Although the collection has no formal statutory listing, it is of local significance to the town and people of Walhalla.

At present, The Post Office mail room and residence are being utilised as a museum for visitors to aid in the interpretation of the building's history, its past occupants, mail services that were provided in Walhalla showcasing periods of growth and decline during the gold rush.

Three vintage flour sacks with faded print, two rusted metal cans, a small vintage box labeled 'Chocolat Buttons,' all placed on a dusty shelf in front of a wooden wall.

The Walhalla Post and Telegraph Office Museum’s collection is a vital repository of the town’s rich historical heritage, encompassing artefacts related to post and telegraph services, the lives of past postmasters, and the broader history of Walhalla as a mining town. This assessment highlights the significance of the museum's collection both locally and at the state level, emphasizing its role in preserving and interpreting the history of communication and community life in Victoria.

The policies, plans and recommendations provided in this report offer a roadmap for enhancing the museum’s operations, ensuring that the Walhalla Post and Telegraph Office Museum remains an essential part of Victoria’s cultural landscape. Through dedicated stewardship and innovative approaches, the museum can continue to educate, inspire, and engage visitors for many years to come.
